1. “Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower.”
2.“Be a yardstick of quality. Some people aren’t used to an environment where excellence is expected.”
3. “The only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it.”
4. “You know, we don’t grow most of the food we eat. We wear clothes other people make. We speak a language that other people developed. We use a mathematics that other people evolved… I mean, we’re constantly taking things. It’s a wonderful, ecstatic feeling to create something that puts it back in the pool of human experience and knowledge.”
5.“There’s a phrase in Buddhism, ‘Beginner’s mind.’ It’s wonderful to have a beginner’s mind.”
6. “We think basically you watch television to turn your brain off, and you work on your computer when you want to turn your brain on.”
7. “I’m the only person I know that’s lost a quarter of a billion dollars in one year…. It’s very character-building.”
8. “I would trade all of my technology for an afternoon with Socrates.”
9. “We’re here to put a dent in the universe. Otherwise why else even be here?”
10. “Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”

POSITIVITY WORKS WONDERS
POSITIVITY WORKS WONDERS IF YOU WANT TO TAKE YOUR COMPANY’S FUTURE FORWARD
ADITI GUHA

Ever wondered if a jadu ki jhappi can make a difference to a professional’s life? Is it possible that the magic of a positive move, a warm hug or a few words can change the course of your life and work? It’s time we realised they can. Let’s begin to believe there’s a Munnabhai or a Ranchor Das Shyamaldas Chanchar in all of us. Only that we need to find them within ourselves.
POSITIVITY
The secret behind Munnabhai and Rancho’s success story could be any corporate’s winning formula. All it requires is to follow the golden rules of positive thinking while at work. And the power within could hail you as a leader par excellence! We are all born positive thinkers. But things begin to change once positive traits are
clouded by the inevitable stresses at the workplace. But just as the leader in you begins to falter, remember to recapture the innate positiveness that can lead to incredible success. The mantra lies in 10 crucial traits:
Optimism: To expect positive outcomes even in the face of roadblocks or crises. Difficult, but doable. Before starting a project, write down the reasons why you should be optimistic. Review the list whenever you feel yourself shifting towards pessimism.
Enthusiasm: Positive energy, passion or personal motivation mean a lot. The secret lies in connecting mundane tasks to a meaningful purpose. Remember the hospital janitor who got a jhappi from Munnabhai when he replied, “I’m creating a clean, safe environment that helps the nurses and doctors make people healthy”? That’s what you call the right attitude!
Belief: Begin to trust yourself, others and/or a higher power for support and guidance. Belief drives optimism. Says Sujoy Banerjee, vice-president, human resource, Eveready Industries India Ltd: “An executive’s frame of mind is crucial for his success. A positive outlook is futuristic and helps him look at the pluses on offer. Negativity in any form hits productivity and stops you from looking ahead. It is the belief in oneself that drives you to deliver at a personal level. From the company’s point of view, a positive outlook and rules framed likewise can help it deliver its vision and categorise what it aims to achieve in the future.”
Integrity: Personal commitment to honesty and openness. Living by and for one’s standards in life and work. Just ask yourself the three Qs:
Is it legal and in line with the organisation’s policy?
Is it fair to all concerned — both short and long term?
How will I feel about myself in the end? You will, for sure, end up being more confident and positive.
Courage: The willingness to take risks and overcome fears, even when the outcome is uncertain. You could begin by considering the worst-case scenario and then developing a game-plan. Go in for a self SWOT analysis. You find you have very little to lose. Confidence: Being personally assured of one’s abilities and potential. Belief is the foundation of confidence. It’s wise to do away with negative phrases, such as I can’t... impossible... I’m afraid that.... Such generalisations predict negative outcomes and dismiss possibilities. It’s important to use confident language and think about past successes. Determination: Tireless pursuit of a goal. “Positive thought is a core requisite for the good health of a company’s top management as well as its staff. The vitality of the corporation will be missing and performance will face ups and downs without positive vibes and approaches. Positive thinking brings a clarity in thought and proposes a sense of direction. It is the means to take a problem solving route in the face of adversities and helps you to keep hoping,” says Professor Prodip Kumar Sett, HR Management, IIM Calcutta. The mantra, thus, lies in:
Attacking doubt or self-pity
Staying committed to and disciplined about deadlines
Knowing when to quit
Patience: Willingness to wait for opportunity or results from oneself and from others. Don’t take delays personally. They rarely have to do with you directly
Calmness: Maintaining serenity and balance in response to difficult situations and challenges. This can be done by: 1. Tackling the problem you least want to address first thing each morning. You’ll free up enormous psychological energy by not fretting all day and 2. Quickly dealing with physical symptoms of stress. Practice relaxation techniques that will prevent the anxiety from mounting. “Under stress and pressure, the mind often becomes preoccupied with past mistakes and events or is anxious over future goals and deadlines. This constant oscillation in the mind results in lower performance, lack of concentration, and decreased efficiency. Conflicts and stress that originate in the mind get stored as toxins in the body, resulting in ill-health, a lack of focus and an inability to make effective decisions,” says His Holiness Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, founder, The Art of Living Foundation.
Focus — attention directed on preset goals and priorities. Concentrating on one priority at a time is critical to success. So, it’s time to think positive and act positive for all those who look ahead in life for a better future.
